MessageAuthor

Just purchased a 2000 S60 20T - Not sure if this is normal or not but in reverse especially when cold the car shudders or seems to hesitate only under the slightest revs more so under load. the other thing i notices was a light clicking noise from the right front wheel as you accellerate in D or reverse, trans shifts perfectly and car is 69km''s reg service etc... any help appreciated

RE: s60 trans problem?

My auto box is definitely shot , the car will only inch forward and reverse works fine , giving fault codes to say the gear ratios are incorrect . Would recommend you get the fault codes read , there are other possibilities apart from the main gearbox clutches welding or failing , gear selection actuating solenoids can give problems as can the hydraulic valve itself and cost a bit less to fix , more unlikely the transmission control module or sensors . Do a google on AW55-50SN and you will get links to some of the American forums where this box would be fitted to almost every P2 volvo , they do seem to give a lot trouble but there is a lot of info available free . Pink dosnt sound like the right colour to me , I think it should be cherry red but again I am not an expert . If you are going to change the oil go to a GM dealer for the oil as they charge one third the price of Volvo and its the same JWS3309 . It maybe also the case that the TCM just needs a software upgrade , the software learns driving modes and selects best gearchange points so you need to rule this out first before spending a lot on the other things but dont let the fault develop .

I see you are in New Zealand , I visited Wellington 20 years ago , would expect there isnt a lot of choice with respect to the number of people who can service the car , I have the same problem in Ireland , you need a high population to get a good spread of main dealers and independants otherwise you get one main dealer who you are stuck with .

there are a couple of volvo deals in wgtn, cars running fine no hiccups since however I will need a top mount as it moves a bit sometimes clunks and looks worn. And the drive shaft bolts sound loose a common problem apparently - XC ones are recommended replacements
